Gate 1: Nao Toutai 闹头台 (First Harassing the Stage)

Nao Toutai 闹头台 (First Harassing the Stage), or Nao Huatai 闹头台 (harassing the flower stage), is a musical introduction with four parts. In the first part the bamboo flutes are principal; in the second the small “hu”; in the third the small suona; in the fourth the large suona. The sections are divided clearly, and function to let people know that the performance is beginning, to attract and entertain, while demonstrating the performance skills of the musicians of the troupe (Song 1984a: Part 1: 76; Wang ed. 1998: 219).
